Mac Os X Install Esd Download: A Guide to Getting the Full Installer for OS X El Capitan or Later

You don't need a bootable installer to upgrade macOS or reinstall macOS, but it can be useful if you want to install macOS on multiple computers without downloading the installer each time, or you're unable to install a compatible macOS from the Finder or macOS Recovery.

For information about the createinstallmedia command and the arguments you can use with it, make sure that the macOS installer is in your Applications folder, then enter the appropriate path in Terminal:

One of the premier troubleshooting features of Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) is Lion Recovery. If you ever have system or drive issues, Lion Recovery lets you boot your Mac into a special recovery mode to check or repair your hard drive, browse the Web for troubleshooting help, restore your drive from a backup, or even reinstall Lion itself. (See our hands-on with Lion Recovery for all the details.)

Updated 6/27/2012, 9pm, to add note about Disk Utility error message introduced with the 10.7.4 installer, and 6/29/2012, 8:20am, to correct instructions when creating a drive using the 10.7.4 installer.

There are many posts on the Internet where instructions are given for creating OS X USB installers by using the TransMac and other such applications on a Windows machine. Many of these posts assume one is starting with a disk image (.dmg) file made from an existing OS X USB flash drive installer.

An InstallMacOSX.dmg file for OS X El Capitan, can be downloaded from the Apple website How to download macOS or How to create a bootable installer for macOS. While this file can be restored to a flash drive, the result is not a working OS X El Capitan USB installer.

Using Windows to create an USB flash drive OS X El Capitan installer requires third party software beyond just TransMac. The steps below outline one possible method for creating an USB flash drive OS X El Capitan installer using Windows and other free third party tools.

Use Microsoft Edge (or some other web browser) to download the following installers to your Downloads folder. The file names are current as of September 22, 2022. If both 32 bit and 64 bit versions are available, the 64 bit version is given in the table.

Use the File Explorer to delete the OS X Install ESD folder and InstallAssistant.icns file in your Downloads folder. If you wish, you can also delete the downloaded files. When finished, close the File Explorer window, then empty the Recycle Bin.

The instructions for using Windows to create an USB flash drive OS X El Capitan installer are given in my first answer. This answer addresses concerns posted by user Fred - with respect to my first answer.

If you open App Store and click Updates, you can update your Lion installer to version 1.0.16. It replaces your copy if you allowed it to self-erase at installation. But using the InstallESD.dmg from inside this installer (SHA1 = 8ef208772f878698e9dd92b3632e25b23ffc9ca7) creates a bootable 10.7.3 (11D50) USB stick. That is cool.

Tried this and now i am in the middle of no where. Just lost os and now it just goes straight to recovery and that also does not re install lion :( any ways working on it should be able to find a solution :)

No, as long as you are installing Lion on your own personal Macs, this is fine. Mac OS X Lion comes with a very generous personal license that allows you to install the OS on all of your personal Macs. This method just allows you to avoid downloading the entire package again.

You have 11A511. The App Store version is 11A494. Slightly older version for the older Macs. 11A511 components are downloaded during the install process. See my comment to your other post about option-clicking.

This does not work for the version released through the app store as 10.7.0, there is no such install file left around. Maybe Apple adjusted the installer to prevent this? I am looking for a way to do this to install to my other machines as this iMac will be going back to Snow Leopard for the time being.

I lost my OSX SL CD. Can I buy and download Lion on my MacBook Air, make a usb-stick like this, and then do a clean install with it on my iMac? Or will this usb stick only be useable on the machine I made it?

Great instructions. Not tried it yet BUT just to be clear: if I pay my 20 for Lion on my macbook pro, I can put Lion OS on a USB and then install Lion again for free on my MacBook Air from it and it will just replace snow leopard on the air and turn the air into a Lion machine?

you will be able to do an upgrade using this methodon your macs as long as they have core 2 duo ornewer intel processor 2gb of ram or more 8 + gb of harddrive space free I would recommend 40gb + free forbest performance and even though you have downloadedlion using a Mac other than you are installing it on the installerwill still insist you have to be running 10.6.6 or laterand will not proceed with the upgrade unless you are running10.6.6 or later

If you have the foresight to let Time Machine perform a full backup of your Mac before running the Lion installer (but after it has downloaded from the App Store) then you can skip re-downloading the 4Gb file. Just go to Time Machine, visit your Applications folder, find the TM backup with the Lion installer (Install Mac OS X Lion) and restore it. Ta-da! ;)

installing over the top would be consideredan upgrade rather than a clean installnow this method is a quicker method for the mostpart as you do not have to install your favoriteapps again or add your personal settings to mail for examplehow ever the percentage of upgrade installations that eitherfail or have issues after installation is higher than the

percentage experienced from clean installationswith all that taken into account I would recommenda clean installation but do keep in mind when upgradingupdating or changing or installing software the chance ofencountering issues is likely no matter how you go aboutdoing it

Is this bootable Lion image something that you can use as an emergency repair disk by adding things like DiskWarrior and TechTools Pro (when they are lion certified)? Or is this bootable image only capable of booting and installing Lion?

On the same topic, if my assumption is incorrect, would my solution be to wait for DasBoot to be lion certified or to install of SL on a new partition, put on lion, slim it all down, and clone it to a thumb drive?

after lion is installed the lion app will disappear from yourapps folder you basically have to extract the installesd.dmgbefore you or the Mac restarts to complete the lion installationalternatively you can purchase lion 10.7.0 on USB rom drivefrom the apple site or apple store for 75 aud yes is a littlemore costly but it gives the security that no one can formatthe drive on you making it a good alternative

Now that OS X Yosemite is available, many users may wish to create a bootable installer drive from something like a USB flash thumb drive or another disk. This allows for several things, the ability to upgrade multiple Macs without having to re-download the installer, the ability to perform a clean install, and also the convenience of having a separate bootable reinstallation drive in the event you need it for serving a Mac.

The next step will actually make the installer drive from the previously formatted USB disk. If you already have the OS X Yosemite installer application in the /Applications/ folder on the Mac, you can skip directly to step 3:

This allows you to update any version of OS X from Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks, directly to OS X Yosemite, with the installer that was just made. You can also perform a clean install (which we separately address in a thorough walkthrough here), or update multiple Macs without having to download it from the App Store again. Be sure to always back up the target Mac before updating OS X, whether to OS X 10.10 or any other version, you can follow detailed instructions on how to prepare a Mac for OS X Yosemite here. Enjoy OS X Yosemite!

Thank you, you saved my life. My USB was stuck in MBR partition scheme. How come the macOS installer does not format the USB drive by itself with the correct partition scheme? Or at least tell us that something is wrong?

I did everything right (with a 16 GB flashdrive) exited Terminal, but when i was booting it up from the disk select menu it said needs 3.7 GB more of space to install on this disk. Can anyone please help me? I am trying to boot up my iMac with it. Thanks

Hello guys. Im a newbie to mac and ive got a real problem on my hands. I have a 2009 white macbook im trying to upgrade to Yosemite. However, I cannot boot into the macbook because I mistakenly erased my startup disk. Now I just made a bootable usb disk from a windows tool called TransMac but my macbook doesnt show this bootable disc when I try to install from it. Any help please?

Has anyone operating with Mavericks attempted to make a Yosemite installer USB drive using the Yosemite installer download?Apple HT201372 indicates the createinstallmedia command is to work only with the version of the OS X Installer app it came with. Does this mean to create Yosemite media the system must be running Yosemite?

Wingle. Considering that users update to OS X Yosemite from OS X Mavericks, hmm I suspect you did not even read the article here, describing how to make a USB installer drive for OS X Yosemite, from OS X Mavericks or OS X Yosemite, as long as you have the Yosemite installer downloaded. This article answers your questions and shows you how to create the installer drive with a USB disk of your choice.

I would suggest reading the article and then following the steps precisely, if you can not do that, then you should not try to make a USB installer and you should probably not install OS X Yosemite either. Maybe wait for the OS X El Capitan installer and use that in September.

The command does indeed format the drive and then place the installer files. If you used your external, this would have formatted the drive. Not the end of the world. You have an arduous task ahead to recover your files. 2ff7e9595c
