World Ozone Day is celebrated on September 15th of each year. It was started in 1985 in Warsaw, Poland. World Ozone Day was created because of the ozone hole that was discovered over the Antarctic. Ozone is the part of the Earth's atmosphere that keeps the planet from getting too hot, the hole was created by chemicals released in the air and the ozone was broken down and lost. Ozone can prevent sunburn, cause eye damage, harm lung tissue, and weaken the immune system.
This year the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been focusing their attention on trying to eradicate malnutrition, prevent obesity, increase the amount of forests and plant new species. Their motto, "a better world for our children," is what the goal of World Ozone Day is supposed to bring about.

This year, on September 15th, 2007, the United States has chosen to celebrate World Ozone Day with a special program called "Making a Difference." At the event, the "Help the Heal the Planet" competition was held. There was a national contest to design a logo for the day. (You can see the contest entries here.)
To make your logo, you had to come up with a way to show the theme "Help the Heal the Planet." The winner, Linda, is shown here:
There were 3 winners in the U.S. and 2 in Canada. Linda is from the U.S., Corinne from Canada, and Stephanie from Germany. They will all be in the running to win the $10,000 grand prize. They will receive all the money from the contest if they win.
